Costa Rica hit by 6.6 magnitude earthquake

A powerful 6.6 magnitude earthquake has struck the western coast of Costa Rica, according to reports from the United States Geological Survey.

The quake was centred about 38 miles south of Liberia, Costa Rica, at a depth of 11.8 miles.

This is just a few miles from the popular tourist town of Nicoya, according to the USGS.

The original quake was felt in the capital San Jose.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries following the incident.
