Austin, Texas becomes home of Formula 1 in US

The Texan capital, Austin has been announced as the home city for Formula 1™ in the USA from 2012 to 2021.

Next year’s Formula 1 United States Grand Prix event, the first since 2007, is expected to be held in June, in the new Circuit of the Americas track; which is currently under construction to cater for 120,000 people and will offer state of the art facilities for motor racing fans.

Commenting on the announcement Margo Richards, director of tourism & cultural marketing at the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, said: “Austin is already known as the Live Music Capital of the World, and has debuted on the global stage with such marquee events as the SXSW Music, Film and Interactive Conferences and Festivals and Austin City Limits Music Festival. The Formula 1™ United States Grand Prix now presents the opportunity to showcase Austin as a leading travel destination, one that is effectively positioned to accommodate large-scale, international events for sports enthusiasts.

“In the next few years, Circuit of Americas will host the biggest names in both Formula 1™ and MotoGP motorcycle racing, and will also offer world-class research facilities and expansive event space. We are looking forward to representing the United States in Formula 1™ over the next 10 years.”

Austin’s Formula 1 track is located approximately two miles from Austin Bergstrom International Airport. The track will cover over three miles, featuring 20 strategic turns and elevation changes of 133 feet, designed to challenge drivers and thrill motor racing fans.
