Southwest Airlines Reports August Traffic

Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV)
announced today that the Company flew 4.4 billion revenue passenger miles
(RPMs) in August 2001, a 15.7 percent increase from the 3.8 billion RPMs flown
in August 2000.  Available seat miles (ASMs) increased 10.0 percent to
5.8 billion from the August 2000 level of 5.2 billion.  The load factor for
the month was 75.8 percent, compared to 72.1 percent for the same period last
year.

For the first eight months of 2001, Southwest flew 31.1 billion RPMs,
compared to the 28.1 billion RPMs recorded for the same period of 2000, an
increase of 10.9 percent.  Available seat miles increased 11.6 percent to
43.7 billion from the 2000 level of 39.2 billion.  The year-to-date load
factor was 71.2 percent, compared to 71.7 percent for the same period last
year.
