Travel agencies versus the internet: China and Russia are catching up with online travel bookings

In China and Russia more and more people are making use of the internet to book their trips instead of going to travel agencies. According to a special evaluation of IPK International’s World Travel Monitor, which was commissioned by ITB Berlin, from 2008 to 2012 the market share of internet bookings in China more than doubled, rising from 19 to 39 per cent. In Russia too, the internet has rapidly become an important medium for booking trips abroad. Over the last five years its market share has nearly quadrupled, rising from nine to 42 per cent.

Almost 50 per cent of Germans have already made up their minds to take an extra break in addition to their main annual holiday. According to the findings of a representative survey carried out by ADAC Reisemonitor and presented at ITB Berlin, around 45.1 per cent of the respondents said that in 2013 they were planning to go on an extra break taking five days or longer.

By the year 2020 annual growth in Muslim travel will have reached 4.8 per cent, significantly higher than the global figure of only 3.8 per cent. By this time a total of 14 per cent of all international trips will be undertaken by Muslims, according to the results of a survey presented at the ITB Berlin Convention which was carried out by Reem El Shafaki, a senior associate of DinarStandard.

US Gay and lesbian hotel guests spend an average 57 per cent more on their travels than their heterosexual counterparts. That is the result of the latest survey by Community Marketing Inc., a partner of ITB Berlin. Rika Jean-Francois, ITB Berlin’s CSR officer and member of the board of the International Gay & Travel Association (IGLTA) presented the findings at the ITB Berlin Convention and at the recently held strategy conference of Wien Tourismus in Vienna.

Abu Dhabi claims top awards at ITB Berlin 2013

Abu Dhabi marked its record-breaking appearance at the ITB Berlin travel trade fair by scooping double honours in the Cologne Business School show awards. The authority, which mounted a pavilion shared by 63 stakeholders, took the award for ‘Best Exhibit & Attractions’ recognising the cultural attractions of a calligraphy, henna design and perfumery which proved popular with visitors.
