160 Killed in Plane Crash

A plane carrying residents of the French island of Martinique crashed in western Venezuela with at least 160 people on board today, and officials said it appeared there were no survivors.

The French civil aviation authority said there were 153 passengers on board and all were French citizens from the Caribbean island of Martinique. All of the 153 died in the crash.

The West Caribbean Airways plane was headed from Panama to Martinique when the pilot reported trouble with both the engines to the Caracas air control tower on Tuesday morning, said Francisco Paz, president of the National Aviation Institute.
