Born and raised in Germany, I learnt early about ‘being green.’ Here in Barbados, it is a relatively new idea to pay close attention to environmental issues. As an example, a couple of years ago, I had to insist that cleaning products, not hazardous to us or the environment, must be used instead of the chlorine-based ones that were in use all over the island.

“Today it is in ‘everybody’s blood’ as we say in Germany, to be environmentally conscious in all of our daily activities at the guest house. Today, members of our staff come up with their own ideas on how to advance our green practice, while maintaining high standards. One of our interesting innovations was to replace common drinking straws with home grown bamboo straws to serve our house drink, coconut water in its own shell,” added Miss Wetzels.
