Marriott announces Matilda’s Debutante Ball

Matilda, the newest Algonquin cat, makes her Grand Debut at the Algonquin Hotel on Wednesday, August 10th. The beautiful Ragdoll will be presented by Sandy Robins, Pet Style Expert and Author. The evening will include a feline fashion show by Meow Wear, benefiting North Shore Animal League America, and a designer birthday cake created by Adam Beckworth of A Little Somethin’ Sweet. The catwalk MEWdels are courtesy of the Westchester Feline Club.

All proceeds from the event will go to Matilda’s favorite charity, North Shore Animal League America, with a minimum entrance fee of $25.00. Guests are also encouraged to adopt a pet from the Animal League mobile Adoption Unit, which will be parked in front of the hotel on the day of event from 3 PM to 7 PM. Each pet adopted will be sent home with a $50.00 Sturdi gift certificate donated through the kindness of Sturdi products.

Additionally, a one-of-a-kind portrait of Matilda by local artist Jenny Belin will be auctioned with all proceeds benefiting North Shore Animal League America.

The tradition of having a resident pet at The Algonquin began in the 1930s when a straggly stray cat wandered in through the hotel’s front door looking for food and shelter. Owner Frank Case, the consummate host most famous for inviting Dorothy Parker and her friends to form the legendary Algonquin Round Table in the hotel’s dining room in the ‘20s, welcomed the cat as he did every other guest, and a tradition was born.

Matilda III prepares for her debut after being personally chosen at the North Shore Animal League America by the now-contentedly retired Matilda II. Matilda III eagerly awaits her introduction to the public and is fully prepared to assume her role in a storied Algonquin tradition.
