This August, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa along with Australian luxury surf company Tropicsurf will host the Surfing Championship Trophy, with world champions from around the world competing for the title.

A few of the participants have offered their top surfing tips:

Mark Richards, a five-time world surfing champion says to start by learning the basics and make sure you don’t progress to a smaller board until you have mastered the basics. Practice makes perfect. “Surf as much as you can, and have fun!”

Layne Beachley, who at the ripe age of 20 was ranked the 6th top surfer in the world and is the first woman in history to win seven world championships, offers the following advice – “Be patient. It’s not as easy as we make it look. Learn at a surf school as they will provide you with quality and safe equipment, basic knowledge about the ocean and etiquette in the line up – a strong foundation to progress from.”

Nat Young, a two-time world surfing champion and winner of three Australian titles, recommends that when paddling for a wave, “close your fingers and keep your legs together. Watch the wave over your shoulder while paddling and always give one more quick stroke before leaping to your feet.”

Timing is key. Don’t try to muscle the wave or work against it. The ocean is more powerful than you, so go with it.
Use the ocean’s energy to project you up, out, across, down and along.
Don’t make up your mind that you want to do something before taking off and reading the wave. Keep an open mind and a flexible approach.
