Winner of the International Architectural Contest for Expo 2017 revealed

On October 22, the International Architectural Contest revealed the winning design idea for the Expo 2017 Exhibition Site.

As previously reported, on October 16 the meeting on the preparation and conduct of the international exhibition EXPO-2017 under the leadership of the Head of the State Nursultan Nazarbayev approved the design of the Expo-2017 exhibition site. The winner of the architectural competition was announced as the Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill Architecture Company.

To remind you, the total area of the designed object is 173.4 ha, out of which 25 ha corresponds to the actual exhibition center, while the territory of 148 ha will accommodate housing projects, socio-cultural, education and health-care facilities, shopping centers, parks and boulevards. The approximate area of the exhibition pavilions will be 118 620 m2, service area – 95 400 m2, and housing – 686 465 m2. The construction of the EXPO city is planned in the Esil district, a perimeter of streets and avenues: Kabanbai Batyra, Hussein Bin Talal, Orynbor and Ryskulova.

During this year work will begin on the project development and documentation. Construction work is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2014. The developer of the “EXPO-2017 construction site will be NC “JSC “Astana EXPO-2017”.

The Symbol of the EXPO-2017 exhibition will be the Kazakhstan Pavilion, built on several floors in the form of a sphere with the whole area accounting to 24 000 m2. The symbol of the exhibition is located in the center of the EXPO city. It is surrounded by the International, Theme and Corporate Pavilions.

According to the words by the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Contest Jeremy Rifkin, the project of Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill Architecture is the most practical in terms of both sustainable development and architectural and artistic design and its further use after EXPO-2017.

The advantages of the project is that all of the objects after the exhibition can be changed, disassembled or converted, that is, the demolition of the buildings is not required.. Overall, the general layout and buildings were designed using the principles of environmentally, economically and socially sustainable design. The expressive architectural language of the EXPO-2017 object is unique, it carries a colossal advantage to Kazakhstan, but more importantly the project will create a legacy, for our country and for the world.

As mentioned by the Chairman of the Board of National Company “Astana Expo 2017” JSC Mr. Yermegiyayev: “The platform of Expo-2017 will become a place that will embody the five pillars of the Third industrial revolution.”

According to the project designed by the winners of the architectural competition all the energy consumed by the visitors of the EXPO exhibition will be generated from renewable sources. And all the buildings present themselves as power plants that use solar and wind energy.

The Architects of Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill Architecture Company have presented the preliminary data in regards to the location and data of the EXPO objects.

The Exhibition zone includes the following main pavilions:
Kazakhstan Pavilion, located at the heart of the EXPO city it will become the symbol of the EXPO-2017 exhibition, its area – 24 000 m2;

Theme Pavilions “World Energy”, “Energy for life”, “Energy for all”, “ My future energy”, approximately 4 000 m2 each, with the whole quadrature being 16 000 m2;

The share of international pavilions, has 95 000 m2, more than 100 participating countries will present their pavilions at the EXPO-2017 exhibition;

Performance Arts Center will be located on the territory of на 14 000 m2. Centre for the Arts – it’s a specifically designed space for the cultural and entertainment programs. It presents a multifunctional transforming space, open to visitors of all ages;

Corporate Pavilions – they are commercial pavilions for the sponsors and partners of the exhibition the area of which will be 9 000 m2;

Energy Best Practices Area - which will showcase the best examples of the use of alternative energy will take 3 500 m2;

Congress center consisting of 42 000 m2 – a zone dedicated for meetings, conferences and forums.
