Thompson takes over sales leadership role at Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic has appointed Joe Thompson as senior vice president sales and distribution.

Thompson will oversee Virgin Atlantic’s global sales and distribution operation, heading up a team of approximately 220 people and leading the airline’s relationships with corporate customers and distribution partners.

He moves into the role from his current position as senior vice president network and alliances.

In addition to his sales and distribution responsibilities, he will continue to lead on Virgin Atlantic’s joint venture partnership with Delta Air Lines and support the implementation of a new passenger service system, AIR4.

Thompson will report to Virgin Atlantic executive vice president, commercial, Erik Varwijk who said of the appointment: “I am delighted Joe has accepted this new role. Joe has extensive experience at Virgin Atlantic and will be a dynamic leader for our sales and distribution teams.

“He is very well placed to help us deliver against our plans for long term success.”

Thompson has a wealth of experience at Virgin Atlantic in a variety of senior manager roles in the airline’s commercial and operational teams.

Prior to his current position in network and alliances, he was general manager airport operations, leading great progress in operational performance and customer service.

He has also worked internationally for Virgin Atlantic, leading country teams in India and Hong Kong with responsibility for revenue, passenger and operational activity.

Speaking of his new position, Thompson said: “I am really excited by the chance to take on these new responsibilities and the chance to lead our sales and distribution teams across the network.

“The new 787-9 aircraft that are being delivered, our joint venture with Delta and our technology investments in AIR4 and customer insight all offer exciting opportunities for revenue growth at Virgin Atlantic.”
