LAN-TAM merger hit by further stumbling block in Chile

The proposed merger of LAN Airlines of Chile and Brazilian counterpart TAM Airlines has hit a further delay as a Chilean Constitutional Tribunal confirmed it would delay its decision in the matter.

Following a meeting earlier, tribunal officials said a decision on whether to formally take up a complaint by local airline PAL against the planned merger would be announced soon.

However, no date has been set.

“The decision on whether the complaint is taken up is pending and will be issued in the coming days,” a tribunal official confirmed.

The tribunal had already delayed making a decision last week.

In Brazil, the deal has cleared two of three antitrust hurdles and is awaiting action by the country’s antitrust council, Cade.
