Budget airlines rule Polish skies

According to data collected by the Civil Aviation Office (ULC), in Q1 the traffic at Polish airports amounted to 2.5m passengers, out of whom 43.5 percent were clients of low-cost carriers (LCCs). Despite this fact, PLL LOT retained its market leader position with a market share of 36 percent. However, the positon of runner-up is currently occupied by LCC Wizz Air.

Third biggest airline company in terms of market share was another LCC, Ryanair. It was followed by Centralwings, Lufthansa and SkyEurope. In the respective period of 2005, LCCs controlled only 25.8 percent of the Polish market. Meanwhile, in the first three months of 2006 seven out of the ten biggest airline companies operating on the domestic market were low-cost carriers. Apart from the aforementioned companies, EasyJet, Germanwings and Air Shuttle also made it onto the top-ten list. Altogether in Q1 LCCs flew 1.12m passengers.
