Riviera Maya Shows Signs of Positive Tourism Growth

From January å- June 2003 the Riviera Maya welcomed 991,887 tourists from around the world, a nearly 10% increase as compared to the same time period last year, according to statistics released by the Tourism Promotion Board of the Riviera Maya.

The U.S. accounted for the greatest number of tourist arrivals, with more than 418,877 people arriving from the U.S. during the first six months of 2003. This accounts for 42.23% of all tourist arrivals during this time period. Arrivals from North America, which includes the U.S., Canada and Mexico accounted for 714,140 or 72% of all tourist arrivals to the Riviera Maya. Europe, the Riviera Maya’s second largest market, accounted for 26.57% of arrivals.

For the month of June 2003 hotel occupancy was 71.06%, up 2.22% from June 2002.  Hotel occupancy for the first six months of 2003 was 78.37%, a 1.42% increase over the same time period last year.
