Queensland based travellers will have even more choice and convenience with the announcement that Australia’s low fare airline, Virgin Blue, will begin direct flights between Brisbane and Hobart from 7 October.
The new Brisbane-Hobart route positions Virgin Blue as the only airline to operate non-stop between Queensland and Tasmania on a daily basis, nurturing the tourism industry as well as the budgets of both business and leisure travellers.
It follows strong support for Virgin Blue’s flights to Tasmania, with a large number of people taking advantage of the connections currently available between the two cities.
Head of Communication and Strategy, David Huttner, said, “The decision to offer another direct daily service is based on the strong support from our home state of Queensland, and now we are the only airline flying direct from Brisbane to every state and territory capital.
In celebration of the new direct flights to Hobart, a special one-way launch fare of $99* is now on sale from now until 18 August, for travel from 7 October to 30 November 2003.
Virgin Blue’s Mid-week Mini-Fares start from $149* one way on the net, with a Fully Flexible walk up fare of $410* which is 32% cheaper than Qantas’s walk up connecting fare of $607 between the two cities.
David Huttner added, “We anticipate a strong response to this new direct service which will provide South East Queenslanders with an affordable and convenient opportunity to head south to experience first-hand the natural wonders of Tassie. It will also entice more Tasmanians to enjoy the warmth and wonder of Queensland which is good news for tourism but even better news for travellers.”
The new Virgin Blue flight will depart Brisbane at 8.45am, arriving in Hobart at 12.25pm before turning around and departing at 12.55pm, arriving back into Brisbane at 2.50pm.
The introduction of the Brisbane-Hobart flight will also coincide with other schedule enhancements including:
* An additional Brisbane - Townsville flight on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays from 18 September, taking it to three daily flights on high demand days.
* Two extra Brisbane - Sydney return flights a day from 7 October. The new flights will be timed to add convenience for business Guests travelling in both directions.
* Doubling of capacity on the Brisbane - Canberra route with the launch of a second daily flight from 5 September.
Virgin Blue’s new direct Brisbane-Whitsunday Coast flight is also set to take-off on September 5, while Gold Coast Guests are poised to benefit from the introduction of a once a week flight straight in to the nation’s capital.
Low fares on a direct flight between the Gold Coast and Canberra every Saturday will be available from 6 September, complimenting the existing connecting services already on offer for those wanting to swap politics for paradise or surfing for snow-skiing.
The revamped schedule is due to the arrival of more new aircraft to add to Virgin Blue’s existing modern 737 fleet.
