ARLINGTON, Va., June 4, 2002—US Airways will add Grenada to its expanding Caribbean network with the start of weekly nonstop service linking the island with Philadelphia in December 2002, subject to foreign government approval.

The development will further strengthen US Airways’ position as the second largest carrier between the U.S. and the Caribbean in terms of destinations served, and follows US Airways’ announcement yesterday of a new “GoCaribbean” initiative with three regional Caribbean airlines.

Known as “The Spice Island,” Grenada—located in the eastern Caribbean at the southern point of the Windward Islands—will be served by US Airways with flights every Saturday, using new Airbus A319 aircraft with seating for 120 passengers.

Starting Dec. 21, 2002, flights will depart Philadelphia at 9:45 a.m. and will arrive in Grenada at 3:39 p.m. The return service will depart Grenada at 4:40 p.m. and will arrive in Philadelphia at 8:40 p.m. The new service will operate from the new international terminal facility at Philadelphia airport, currently under construction.

“Grenada will be US Airways’ 20th jet destination in the Caribbean, supplemented by additional Caribbean destinations served by US Airways Express carriers,” said Douglas Leo, vice president of international. “We are especially pleased to add Grenada to our growing Caribbean network, offering excellent connections with major U.S. points we serve from Philadelphia. At the same time our service enhances access to U.S. destinations for travelers originating in Grenada.”

US Airways’ new Philadelphia-Grenada service will follow the airline’s launch of new weekly nonstop flights between Philadelphia and the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, starting Dec. 7, 2002. US Airways will also introduce new services from Charlotte to Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos on November 2, and to Belize on November 9, both with four flights weekly. These three new routes are each subject to foreign government approval.

Additionally, US Airways announced yesterday a cooperation and marketing initiative with three regional Caribbean airlines—Caribbean Star Airlines, Nevis Express and WINAIR (Windward Island Airways)—including affiliation through US Airways’ Dividend Miles frequent traveler program, US Airways Vacations, and in some markets, code share. The GoCaribbean initiative plans to offer additional service to 14 island destinations.

Grenada, a major source of spices, including nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cinnamon and cocoa, offers diverse attractions for travelers, from the harbor capital of St. George’s to its picturesque mountainous interior with its waterfalls and rainforests, and its white sand beaches and coral reefs.

With a developing tourism industry, the island is popular for hiking and trekking, yachting, deep-sea fishing and water sports, and is a leading destination for scuba-diving and snorkeling. Grenada, which has a population of 93,000, is 21 miles long, 12 miles wide, and covers 133 square miles.

US Airways currently serves the following Caribbean destinations: Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Cancun, Cozumel, Grand Bahama Island, Grand Cayman, Montego Bay, Nassau, San Juan, Santo Domingo, St. Croix, St. Lucia, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. US Airways Express also serves North Eleuthera, Governors Harbour, Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay from Florida.
