The Cuban tourism resort of Varadero saw an influx of roughly 22, 000 tourists last New Years Eve. Minister of tourism for the Matanzas region, Felipe Oliva - reported that these were record figures for the Cuban destination.

Mr. Olivia also noted that 2003 had been a fantastic year for Varadero - the best in its history of tourism. Arrival figures were at an all time high as was revenue created by the sector.
