Qantas CEO Alan Joyce says airline must adapt or die
Qantas Airlines chief executive Alan Joyce has warned the airline must seek a truly global perspective or face becoming irrelevant in an increasingly competitive aviation market. Addressing the 2011 Aviation Outlook Summit in Sydney, Joyce accused unions – who will begin industrial action at the airline on Friday – of being “out of touch” with reality.

Not content with having the Last Post played over public address systems during negotiations, the Australian & International Pilots Association confirmed earlier it would be taking its protest at Qantas to the next surreal level. Speaking near the site of a new billboard in Neutral Bay, Sydney, AIPA spokesman Nathan Safe explained the first round of industrial action would see pilots using in-flight announcements to push their agenda.
Qantas strike threat becoming surreal
Proceedings took a turn toward the surreal during the latest round of negotiations between pilots at Qantas and officials from the airline, with two union representatives standing to observe a minute’s silence while the Last Post was played. The incident, which occurred during a Fair Work Australia hearing earlier, was branded a “new low” by the furious airline.

Long-haul pilots at Australian flag-carrier Qantas Airlines have voted to take industrial action for the first time since 1966. In response the airline said it remained prepared to negotiate reasonable increases in pay and conditions, but the demands from the union were “excessive and unsustainable”.

Qantas reaches settlement with Rolls-Royce following engine blow-out
Qantas has announced a settlement with Rolls-Royce following a mid-air engine explosion and subsequent grounding of its Airbus A380 fleet last year. The Australian flag-carrier will receive AUS$95 million from the British manufacturer, following the incident in November last year.
Further ash cloud disruption in southern Australia
Virgin Australia and Qantas Airlines have both cancelled flights in Australia as aviation in the southern hemisphere continues to be affected by volcanic ash. All flights in to and out of Sydney and Melbourne have been cancelled for the next 48 hours as ash from the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano in Chile circles the earth for the second time.

Qantas scales back growth plans as fuel bill bites
Qantas has revealed it will significantly cut back expansion plans as rising fuel costs and the impact of natural disasters around the world take a toll on the airline. Alan Joyce, chief executive at the Australian flag-carrier said the airline was now planning for a 5.5 per cent growth in domestic capacity for 2011-12, compared with eight per cent previously.
Confusion as Australian ash cloud disruption enters third day
Safety was at the heard of a developing debate in Australia this morning, with carriers offering sharply different responses to the ongoing ash cloud crisis. While Australian flag-carrier Qantas has cancelled flights across the country, competitor Virgin Atlantic insisted it was safe to fly.
