Qantas B747 passengers to get A380 experience
Extensive refurbishment work has begun on a $250 million project to overhaul the interiors of nine Qantas Boeing 747-400 aircraft with the installation of state- of-the-art Airbus A380 style seats and in-flight entertainment units.
Standard & Poor’s backs Qantas strategy
Ratings agency Standard & Poor’s has upgraded its outlook on debt at Australian airline Qantas to Stable, from Negative, allowing the carrier to maintain its BBB long-term corporate debt rating. The Australian flag-carrier is one of a handful of airlines from around the world to maintain an investment-grade rating from the three major credit agencies.

Australian airline Qantas Airways has seen annual profits double as it seeks to dispel takeover rumours. The flag-carrier reported a net profit of A$250 million for the year ended June 30th, up from A$112m a year earlier.
Qantas receives green light for American Airlines tie-up
The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission has issued a draft decision proposing to grant authorisation for a Joint Business Agreement between Qantas and American Airlines. Under the JBA, the airlines will coordinate operations on services between Australia/New Zealand and the United States (the trans-Pacific routes), and on their respective services which support the trans-Pacific routes.

One step forward, two steps back: Engineers at Qantas to strike
Officials at the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association in Australia have confirmed plans to take industrial action at Qantas following the announcement of job losses at the airline. Qantas confirmed as many as 1,000 employees would lost their jobs – principally through voluntary redundancy – as part of wide ranging reforms to the carrier outlined earlier this week.

Qantas Airlines chief executive Alan Joyce has warned the airline must seek a truly global perspective or face becoming irrelevant in an increasingly competitive aviation market. Addressing the 2011 Aviation Outlook Summit in Sydney, Joyce accused unions – who will begin industrial action at the airline on Friday – of being “out of touch” with reality.

Not content with having the Last Post played over public address systems during negotiations, the Australian & International Pilots Association confirmed earlier it would be taking its protest at Qantas to the next surreal level. Speaking near the site of a new billboard in Neutral Bay, Sydney, AIPA spokesman Nathan Safe explained the first round of industrial action would see pilots using in-flight announcements to push their agenda.

Proceedings took a turn toward the surreal during the latest round of negotiations between pilots at Qantas and officials from the airline, with two union representatives standing to observe a minute’s silence while the Last Post was played. The incident, which occurred during a Fair Work Australia hearing earlier, was branded a “new low” by the furious airline.

Long-haul pilots at Australian flag-carrier Qantas Airlines have voted to take industrial action for the first time since 1966. In response the airline said it remained prepared to negotiate reasonable increases in pay and conditions, but the demands from the union were “excessive and unsustainable”.
