LATAM Airlines Brasil and Cathay Pacific Airways have entered into a codeshare agreement, offering passengers increased connectivity between South America and Asia. Both airlines are members of oneworld and this agreement further enhances the alliance.
oneworld has today named industry veteran Rob Gurney as its new chief executive. He succeeds Bruce Ashby, who announced in January that he would be stepping down from the role this summer after more than five years in the position. Gurney will join oneworld in October after leaving Gulf carrier Emirates, where he served as senior vice president commercial operations, Americas.
Japan’s ministry of land, infrastructure, transport and tourism has granted an extension of the anti-trust immunity to include Iberia in the joint business between Japan Airlines, British Airways and Finnair. The decision will allow the four airlines to cooperate commercially on flights between Europe and Japan. Iberia is expected to join the existing joint business between the other three airlines as from October 18th, 2016.

Qatar Airways and SriLankan Airlines, both members of the oneworld alliance, have strengthened their cooperation with a bilateral code-share relationship. Both airlines will code-share on each other’s flights between their respective hubs – Qatar Airways’ thrice daily Airbus A340-600 operations to Colombo and SriLankan Airlines’ daily Airbus A330-300 flight to Doha.
The first step has been taken to enable Iberia to join British Airways, Finnair and Japan Airlines in their successful joint business on flights between Europe and Japan. JAL has submitted its application to the Japanese ministry of land, infrastructure, transport and tourism seeking antitrust immunity with Iberia to cooperate on flights between Europe and Japan.
Bruce Ashby is to step down as oneworld chief executive later this year, after more than five years leading the world’s most highly prized airline alliance. He has made himself available to stay at oneworld’s helm until June to enable a seamless handover to his successor.
Jetstar Asia, Jetstar Japan and Jetstar Pacific are adding their networks to Global Explorer, the round-the-world fare offered by oneworld member airlines. Jetstar’s Australian airline already participates in the fare. The addition of these three carriers’ routes, from today, will bring more than 15 new destinations, two key Asian hubs – in Ho Chi Minh City and Singapore – and dozens more routes on board Global Explorer.

It will see the world’s leading organiser of travel and tourism events offer clients attending these events attractive discounts on the worldwide network of the most highly prized global airline alliance.
Qatar Airways has further enhanced its ties with oneworld partner Royal Jordanian, through the launch of a new codeshare agreement, which is set to further expand travel opportunities for both airlines’ customers. Through the new agreement, Qatar Airways’ passengers travelling between Doha and Amman in Jordan, on both Royal Jordanian and Qatar Airways, will benefit from the same airline code and a streamlined level of service from these oneworld partners.
Ivan Chu, chief executive of Cathay Pacific Airways, has been nominated by the governing board of oneworld to serve as its chairman for the year ahead. He succeeds Willie Walsh, chief executive of IAG, the parent of oneworld members British Airways and Iberia. As oneworld governing board chairman, Ivan Chu will act as “first among equals” of the chief executive of the alliance’s member airlines in oneworld governance.
