British victim in Israel bomb attack
A British woman killed in a terrorist attack in Israel has been named.
Mary Jean Gardner, a 59-year-old British national, was studying at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem when she died during an explosion on Wednesday.
As many as 30 others were hurt during the incident, when a bomb was left near the central bus station in Jerusalem.
Branding the attack as ““shocking and despicable”, UK Foreign Secretary William called for those responsible to be held to account.
The Foreign Office added that initial reports suggest the incident “was an act of terrorism”, but advised travel in the country is considered safe.
Yesterday’s explosion appeared timed with the arrival of United States defence secretary Robert Gates, who landed earlier.
Gates, who called the bombing “a horrific terrorist attack” on arrival, is expected to use his visit to discuss regional security concerns including Iran.
