Europe’s Top Birdwatching Destinations
New research from travel insurance expert AllClear has revealed Europe’s best birdwatching destinations.
The researchers analysed globally recognised birdwatching hotspots across eight metrics: number of bird species, number of notable species, a standout species score looking at prevalence, mean annual temperature, mean wind speed, mean annual precipitation, distance from nearest airport and estimated daily tourist costs.
Swedish ‘Migration Corridor of the Continent’ named Europe’s best place to birdwatch
Sweden’s Falsterbo Peninsula tops the European rankings with a score of 50.7 out of 100, making it one of the continent’s most celebrated migration hotspots. England’s Titchwell Marsh follows closely in second place with a score of 50.2, while Scotland’s Fair Isle takes third with a score of 49.7.
England dominates the overall rankings, claiming five of the top 15 spots with Titchwell Marsh leading the way in second place, followed by Minsmere in fifth (46.4/100), Rutland Water in seventh (44.7/100), Slimbridge Wetland Centre and Bowling Green Marsh in joint in eighth (44.3/100).
Scotland also features twice with Fair Isle in third and Loch Gruinart rounding out the list in 15th place (36.4/100).

Greece features twice in the rankings with Kalloni Saltpans on the island of Lesvos taking fourth place (47.7/100), while Lake Kerkini National Park lands in sixth (45.2/100). Spain’s entries include Ebro Delta in 12th (38.2/100) and Monfragüe National Park in 14th (36.5/100), rounding out a strong southern European showing alongside Portugal’s Ria Formosa National Park in tenth (42.4/100).

Falsterbo Peninsula, Sweden - ‘Best Birding’ Score of 50.7/100
Sweden’s Falsterbo Peninsula tops the European rankings with breathtaking sightings of raptors, finches and warblers passing through in enormous numbers. At an average spend of 111 euro (£95) per day, Falsterbo is one of the pricier destinations in the rankings, but for those willing to invest, the reward is a truly world-class birdwatching spectacle that is difficult to match anywhere else on the continent.
Titchwell Marsh, England - ‘Best Birding’ Score of 50.2/100
Titchwell Marsh in Norfolk takes second place. Widely regarded as one of England’s most popular RSPB reserves where a mix of reedbed, freshwater lagoons and sandy beaches create a diverse range of habitats, it attracts everything from marsh harriers and bitterns to avocets and wading birds.
Fair Isle, Scotland - ‘Best Birding’ Score of 49.7/100
The remote Scottish island, Fair Isle, claims third place in the study. Its isolated position in the North Sea makes it a natural landfall for migrating birds, and the thrill of not knowing what might turn up next is precisely what draws enthusiasts back year after year. With a high daily cost of 123 euros (£113) per day, Fair Isle is the most expensive destination in the European rankings but for those who make the journey, it is rarely one to disappoint.
Kalloni Saltpans, Lesvos, Greece - ‘Best Birding’ Score of 47.7
Kalloni Saltpans on the Greek island of Lesvos takes fourth place in the European rankings. With an average temperature of 18°C and modest average rainfall of just 45.3mm, Lesvos enjoys some of the most reliably pleasant weather of any destination in the European rankings, making it a particularly attractive option for those who prefer their birdwatching in the sunshine rather than wrapped up against the wind and cold.
Minsmere, England - Birdwatching Score of 46.4
With a mild average temperature of 11°C and the lowest average rainfall of any destination in the European top 15, Minsmere in Suffolk takes fifth place with conditions here among the most comfortable and predictable on the list. From the booming call of the bittern echoing across the reedbeds to avocets picking their way along the shoreline, Minsmere offers a birdwatching experience that continues to draw visitors from across the country and beyond.
Letitia Smith, Head of Communications at AllClear comments: “Birdwatching is rapidly growing in popularity, and it is easy to understand why. There are few experiences quite like spotting a rare or iconic species in its natural habitat. For those looking for a rewarding but calming way to experience the natural world, birdwatching offers an immersive outdoor adventure that can be enjoyed at a gentle pace without the physical demands of more strenuous activities.
“However, if you have medical conditions, planning carefully is important Factors like climate, accessibility and daily cost all play a hugely important role in ensuring the trip is as comfortable and stress-free, and we hope this research helps travellers of all abilities find a destination that is right for them. As always, we would encourage everyone to ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance in place before they set off, particularly when visiting more remote destinations, so they can focus on the incredible wildlife around them and travel with peace of mind.”
