Farnborough 2016: Qatar Airways to take stake in LATAM

Qatar Airways is to take up to a ten per cent stake in oneworld partner LATAM, which will be acquired in connection with a capital increase. As provided for in the subscription agreement, LATAM Airlines Group will hold an Extraordinary Shareholders Meeting no later than September 2nd, 2016 to propose a capital increase in the amount of US$613 million through the issuance of new shares at a price of US$10 per share.

Qatar Airways Group has announced a three billion QAR operating profit for fiscal year 2016 - nearly three times greater than fiscal 2015 profit of 1.1 billion QAR. The result means an 8.6 per cent operating profit margin, an improvement of nearly six percentage points from the prior year, from 35.6 billion QAR in revenues. The company reported a net profit of 1.6 billion QAR, resulting in a net profit margin of 4.5 per cent.

Qatar Airways and Royal Jordanian are expanding their current code-share agreement, which will add six new destinations to Royal Jordanian’s existing network. Royal Jordanian will enhance Qatar Airways’ network with the addition of flights from Amman to Doha, furthering the existing Qatar Airways code-share on Royal Jordanian operated flights to Doha.

Qatar Airways and SriLankan Airlines, both members of the oneworld alliance, have strengthened their cooperation with a bilateral code-share relationship. Both airlines will code-share on each other’s flights between their respective hubs – Qatar Airways’ thrice daily Airbus A340-600 operations to Colombo and SriLankan Airlines’ daily Airbus A330-300 flight to Doha.

Qatar Airways has announced that it will expand its network to Chiang Mai in Thailand from December 16th. The airline will fly to Chiang Mai five times a week via Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, with an A330-200. The largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai will be the fourth city in the Asian country to be served by Qatar Airways, which currently flies to Bangkok and Phuket, and will commence flights to Krabi on December 6th.

Qatar Airways has added a second daily, non-stop flight along its popular route between John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City and Hamad International Airport in Doha. The new route features the acclaimed Airbus A350 and a new morning departure time from JFK, allowing passengers to arrive in Doha the morning of the following day. The new flight represents the tenth Qatar Airways route between Doha and the United States.

Qatar Airways has announced a substantial aircraft upgrade on the Doha to Geneva route from July 1st 2016, to become the airline’s second Dreamliner route to Switzerland after Zürich. The route, which is currently operated by an Airbus A320 with 132 seats, will be served by the state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner, almost doubling capacity on the direct daily service to 254 seats.

Qatar Airways has inaugurated the airline’s fourth United Kingdom gateway, with direct flights between Doha and Birmingham connecting the city with more than 150 destinations worldwide. The inaugural flight touched down at sunrise and was greeted by a traditional water salute witnessed by a crowd of gathered media, while Qatar Airways chief commercial officer Hugh Dunleavy, who travelled on board the inaugural flight with UK ambassador to Qatar, Ajay Sharma, was greeted at the arrival gate by Birmingham Airport chief executive, Paul Kehoe.
