The world’s fastest growing economy lodging chain just became the world’s largest economy lodging chain, announced Super 8 Motels President and CEO Robert N. Weller to the chain’s franchisees at its International Convention here in Nashville. The chain has reached 1,900 motels.

Super 8‰ has steadily led the economy lodging industry in growth statistics over the last five years. A few of these unbeatable statistics include opening a new motel every 2.3 days for four consecutive years and a 100 percent franchisee renewal rate for the past two years. And, since Super 8 was acquired in 1993 by Cendant predecessor HFS Incorporated, the chain has had 101 percent growth in number of motels and an annual compounded growth rate of 14.5 percent.

“As exciting as it is to be able to say that we have more motels than any other economy lodging chain, it’s more important to understand what that means. It means our people must be doing something right,” says Weller. “If our guests weren’t returning again and again, there wouldn’t be a demand for Super 8 franchises. If there weren’t a demand for Super 8 franchises, we wouldn’t be growing. I’m very proud of our franchisees and my co-workers.”

Just as important, or even more so according to Weller, Super 8’s system wide quality assurance standards have kept pace with growth. With a combination of strict cleanliness standards, a high percentage of new construction motels and high quality conversions, Super 8 has made sure that growth has not compromised quality. Weller says, “It’s always more challenging to keep quality standards uniform in a large organization. We believe that we have some of the toughest standards in the industry today.”

In addition to Super 8’s long-standing policy of four quality assurance inspections annually, twice the number of the industry average, Super 8 has raised the bar for its QA standards. This includes the recently adopted “Operation SuperClean” program under which motels can fail inspections based on Super 8’s strict cleanliness standard alone.

In addition to its newest title, Super 8 continues to receive accolades from the lodging and franchise industry trade publications. Most recently, the chain was named as the top lodging franchise in Entrepreneur magazine’s annual Franchise 500 list and topped Hotel & Motel Management’s Economy Lodging Chain survey as the chain that added the most guestrooms.
