Cayman DOT Supports Internships

Years ago, students dreamed about the summer holidays for months on end. Long, hot, lazy summer days, spent on Seven Mile Beach enjoying the sun, the sand and the sea… but for two industrious young gentlemen, and one young lady, this past summer was anything but lazy!
Randal Foster Martin and Jermaine Sharpe spent the best part of their summer holiday working with the Department of Tourism of the Cayman Islands gaining invaluable work experience and providing the department with some much needed assistance.
Lydia Watling, a year 11 student of Cayman Prep & High School was also with the Department over the summer. Lydia completed a week’s Work Experience program in which she was exposed to the routines of a busy work environment and the particular functions of each unit.
Randal, or Randy as he prefers, is a student at Louisiana State University where he is majoring in Economics. Randy worked in each of the Department’s units - Marketing & Promotions, Product Development, Accounts and Public Relations - and would be quick to tell you that he enjoyed his stint with Marketing & Promotions, concentrating on Web Development the most.
Jermaine, a student at the University of South Florida, is majoring in Marketing. It would appear that he enjoyed his first internship with the Department of Tourism so much that he came back this summer for a second time. Jermaine also had the opportunity to work with all the department’s units, but spent most of his time with the Marketing & Promotions unit where he assisted with Familiarisation Trip development, Special Events and looking after many of the visiting VIPs.
“We wish all our summer interns the best as they return to school. The tourism industry in the Cayman Islands is a relatively un-mined source of job opportunities and the Department of Tourism is delighted to showcase the opportunities which exist in it whenever possible. Randy, Jermaine and Lydia are committed to excellence and I have no doubt they will be an asset to any future employer,” said Mrs. Lania Rittenhouse, Director of Tourism.
