American Express is to cut a further 6,500 jobs, mostly in its travel business.

7,700 job losses were announced earlier this year. The latest job cuts mean Amex will be eliminating a total of about 15% of its total workforce as of the beginning of 2001.

The company said about half of the staff concerned had already been notified while the remainder would find out next year.
