Consumer Reports on Hotel `Deals`

How do you get the best deals on hotels in the United States? Are brokers better? The July issue of `Consumer Reports` has some surprising answers.
In this report, based on a survey of 200 quotes for 100 hotels in March, 2001, both requested directly with the hotel and also through online sites. The Top 5 are shown here:
Travelocity beat the price quoted by the hotel 65% of the time, resulting in average savings of $54 per night. Accomodations Express was next, with a `beat the hotel` success rate of 60%, savings being $32 a night. Hotel Discounts only managed to find a better rate 33% of the time, but the average savings was higher at $37 nightly. Both Expedia and 1-800-USA-hotels found a better rate on 28% of enquiries.
