Edmund Bartlett returns as Jamaica tourism minister

Edmund Bartlett has been appointed Jamaica’s new minister of tourism, returning to the helm of a portfolio he previously held. This follows the February 25th victory at the polls by the Jamaica Labour Party. Bartlett, a marketing executive and long-standing parliamentarian, is no stranger to the tourism portfolio, having served as minister of tourism from 2007 to 2011, as well as opposition spokesman on tourism and more recently, foreign affairs.

Paul Pennicook, director of tourism for the Jamaica Tourist Board, has announced the appointment of Marcia McLaughlin, a hospitality and tourism veteran, as deputy director of tourism, marketing. With her appointment, McLaughlin will have responsibility for developing and coordinating the JTB’s global marketing initiatives, overseeing its public relations and advertising agencies as well as directing its destination marketing, communications, digital marketing and research teams.

The Jamaica Tourist Board has announced the number of tourists from the UK & Ireland visiting between January-December 2015 has surpassed the 200,000 mark for the very first time. There were a total of 201,364 arrivals on the island. This represents an increase of 12.2 per cent from the previous year which saw 179,433 pass through Jamaican shores.

Montego Bay, the second city of Jamaica, now has a Cultural Centre, as the facility was officially opened in Sam Sharpe Square. Formerly the Montego Bay Civic Centre, the facility has undergone major refurbishing, courtesy of the Tourism Enhancement Fund. The centre houses an art gallery, a museum, a space for the performing arts, a bistro, an artisan village and a gift shop.
