Edmund Barlett, Jamaica’s Minister for Tourism, has beat the likes of sprinting superstar Usain Bolt to be voted “Man of Year 2009” by the Jamaica Observer, capping a year which has seen his island’s tourism economy power through the global downturn through savvy initiatives.

The Jamaica Tourist board has launched its first ever price-led advertising campaign in the UK.  Partnering with Thomas Cook and Virgin Holidays, the campaign features seven-night all-inclusive packages for under £800.

In response to the recent Hurricane Dean, Basil Smith Director of Jamaica Tourist Board said ‘We fared reasonably well. Any damage suffered was mostly to landscaping and utility poles.  Damage to hotels is limited and in general the Hotel sector is in good shape. We expect to be open for business and fully operational very soon.’

New room stock, increased airlift, airport expansions, a new convention centre and co-operation from the private sector have all contributed to the JTB’s bright visitor outlook for 2006, which they predict is set to grow by 10.6%.
