Ministry of Railways India announce Power Generation in Railways

Indian Railways has already started manufacturing of new generation 6000 Horse Power (HP) electric locomotives and Electrical Multiple Units (EMUs) with regenerative braking feature at Chittaranjan Locomotive Workshop (CLW) and Integral Coach Factory (ICF) respectively. Such technology will be implemented on more number of locomotives and EMUs in future.

Indian Railways has commissioned one wind mill plant of 10.5 Mega Watt (MW) capacity for ICF, Chennai on 31st March 2009 in Tamil Nadu. Two wind mill power plants of 10.5 MW capacity each one in Jaisalmer (Rajasthan) for North Western Railway and other in Tamil Nadu for Southern Railway have been sanctioned.

Indian Railways further proposes to set up wind mill plants of 72 MW capacity in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnatka, Kerla, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

Indian Railways is also harnessing solar power by providing solar Photo Voltaic modules of varying capacities at Railway stations, office buildings, training institutes and level crossing gates.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri K. H. Muniyappa in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
