October 1st was the first day of the 40th Balloon Fiesta, The Garrity Group coordinated an effort to track the number of balloons that launched from Balloon Fiesta Park in one hour. The tracking was an attempt to set a new world record in the category of “Greatest Mass Hot Air Balloon Ascent in One Hour.”

The Balloon Fiesta held the previous record of 329 hot air balloons, set in 2001. The documentation for the new record attempt of 345 hot air balloons was submitted shortly after the 2011 event.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is an annual festival of hot air and gas balloons that takes place every October in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. It is the largest gathering of balloons and balloonist in the world.
