Five hurt in Austrian train crash

Five people have been hospitalised with serious injuries following a head on train crash in the Austrian capital of Vienna.

Two commuter trains collided on the outskirts of the city during the morning rush hour.

Emergency services cut the injured from the trains, with as many as 25 fire engines at the site of the accident.

“At the moment there are five people seriously injured and several people with light injuries,” emergency services spokeswoman Claudia Gigler told AFP.

“The seriously injured were taken immediately to hospital.”

One of those injured is reportedly one of the two drivers.

The collision occurred at 8:45 local time in the Penzing district of western Vienna.
