Southwest Airlines Reports December Traffic

Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV)
announced today that the Company flew 3.5 billion revenue passenger miles
(RPMs) in December 2001, approximately the same RPMs flown in December 2000.
Available seat miles (ASMs) increased 3.4 percent to 5.5 billion from the
December 2000 level of 5.3 billion.  The load factor for the month was
64.6 percent, compared to 66.5 percent for the same period last year.
 
For the fourth quarter 2001, Southwest flew 10.8 billion RPMs,
approximately the same RPMs flown for the fourth quarter 2000.  Available seat
miles increased 6.4 percent to 16.7 billion from the fourth quarter 2000 level
of 15.7 billion.  The fourth quarter 2001 load factor was 64.5 percent,
compared to 69.0 percent for the same period last year.
 
For the year ended December 31, 2001, Southwest flew 44.5 billion RPMs,
compared with 42.2 billion RPMs recorded for the same period in 2000, an
increase of 5.4 percent.  Available seat miles increased 9.0 percent to
65.3 billion from the 2000 level of 59.9 billion.  The year-to-date load
factor was 68.1 percent, compared to 70.5 percent for the same period last
year.
