Legendary BBQ family wins prize at Sunset Beach Resort & Spa

Sunset Beach Resort & Spa, Jamaicaå‘s best value all-inclusive resort for singles, couples and families, recently awarded å‘Big Bob Gibsonå’ the overall winning title at the resortå‘s 2nd Annual Jamaican Jerk/Southern BBQ Cook-off on September 21, 2003.
More than 40 teams from Birmingham to Belgium turned out for the second annual event held at the 430-room resort. “The turnout was a huge success,” said Sunset Beach Resort & Spa Managing Director Ian Kerr. “We look forward to an even larger attendance next year!”
The winning team - Big Bob Gibson - was comprised of husband/wife team Chris and Amy Lilly, who are a natural fit for this event. Both hailing from Alabama, they currently own and operate two BBQ restaurants in Decatur, AL. The restaurants, both named ‘Big Bob Gibson’ were originally started by Amy’s great-grandfather, who himself was known as Big Bob Gibson. Today, four generations later, the restaurants offer a host of delightful dishes including specialties like pork shoulders and smoked BBQ chicken in a white BBQ sauce - a classic, but secret family recipe. A full range of catering, fabulous desserts and a host of BBQ sauces, rubs and products round out the company’s offerings. The restaurant has won titles from the National BBQ Association, Chile Pepper Magazine and the American Royal Association.
“We have a deep love for BBQ and we’re not afraid to experiment in the kitchen,” said Chris Lilly. “This experience in Jamaica was awesome. We’ll definitely be back next year!”
Lilly stumbled upon the contest when he was asked to be the American consultant to ‘Team Jamaica’ in the Jack Daniel World Championship Cook-off in Lynchburg, Tennessee last year. Team Jamaica, comprised of Sunset Beach Resort & Spa’s very own chefs, walked away with the title. Lilly then visited Jamaica and vowed to enter the resort’s cook-off held this September 21, 2003 in Montego Bay.
