London is set to be the number one destination for budget travellers this year, according to the British Press Association.
Searches for hostels on the HostelBookers.com website for 2007 has put the UK capital top of the list.

The next most popular hostel destinations are Amsterdam, New York, Paris and Barcelona.

Of searches and bookings for travel in 2007, 74% are for familiar destinations in Europe, North America and Australasia,

And of these, more than half (55%) are for culturally-renowned European cities.

Within the top 100 searched-for destinations, only Marrakech and Cairo appeared for North Africa, while Cape Town was the only southern part of the continent to feature - at number 99.

No Middle East cities appeared in the top 100, with the highest-ranking Middle Eastern destination being Tel Aviv, in 207th place.
