THE US GRANT was built in 1910 by Ulysses S. Grant Jr. to honor his Civil War hero father. The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation purchased the landmark in 2003. Ancestors of this Native American tribe originally settled the land that includes Downtown San Diego. In 1875 President Grant passed an Executive Order setting aside 640 acres of land for the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation in east San Diego County. Sycuan’s purchase and careful restoration of the hotel represents an ancestral tribute to their legacy.
