AT&T enhances mobile broadband coverage in Newark Liberty International Airport

As part of its continuing network investment to support growing demand for advanced wireless devices and services, AT&T* today announced that it has expanded its mobile broadband coverage in Newark Liberty International Airport by completing the installation of three new Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) to serve customers in Terminals A, B and C.

“Our readers are constantly on the go, they know the value of a reliable, strong mobile network more than anyone especially when traveling through a busy airport like Newark Liberty International,” said Adam Rodriguez, director, Premium Traveler Magazine. “So when they voted that AT&T has the Best Mobile Phone Coverage in the World for four consecutive years, this strongly reflects that the company’s long-standing dedication to a powerful network is paying off.”

The DAS installations consist of several strategically-placed antennas that distribute AT&T’s wireless network coverage throughout the airport terminals, providing for more efficient management of wireless capacity in heavily-trafficked areas. DAS has the ability to provide enhanced wireless coverage to customers in indoor or outdoor spaces where geographical limitations – terrain, building construction, etc. – or crowd density might otherwise prevent an optimal wireless experience. The additional capacity is expected to help improve call reliability and enable more consistent network access to help customers make the most of their AT&T devices.

“We’ve significantly ramped up our wireless investments to enable an experience that offers New Jersey consumers better speed, reliability and availability where they need it the most,” said J. Michael Schweder, AT&T President New Jersey.

“We want our customers to have a great network experience when they’re checking online flight schedules from their AT&T device or calling friends and family while in the airport,” said Tom DeVito, Vice President and General Manager for AT&T in New Jersey and New York. “We’re committed to our investment in the local wireless network, and providing enhanced wireless coverage inside the airport is just one way that we’re investing in the Garden State.”

AT&T’s mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T has the best international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider, providing access to voice service in more than 220 countries and data service in more than 200 countries.

AT&T also operates the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network** with more than 24,000 hotspots in the U.S. and provides access to more than 135,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements.
