As London City Airport launches a report on its future plans, businesses and developers are calling for more recognition of the huge investment taking place in and around the Royal Docks, which they are calling the ‘Crown Jewels of East London’.

London City Airport has submitted a planning application for permission to expand its current infrastructure to accommodate up to 120,000 flight movements per year, a level already permitted under an application granted in 2009. The proposals will also allow the airport to double its passenger numbers - to six million - over the next ten years, while continuing to attract inward investment into east London and acting as a catalyst for the regeneration of the area.

London City Airport has seen a sharp increase in passenger numbers, with 25 per cent more fliers making their way through the terminal in July than last year. In total a record 328,155 passengers were recorded during the month, up by 12,600 from the same period of 2012.

The only airport in central London had its busiest ever month, week and day in May, peaking at 15,697 passengers on Friday 23rd to total 315,514 - the highest monthly figure in its 26 year history. The figures represent an increase of almost 20 per cent compared to May 2012.

London City Airport saw more than three million passengers pass through its gates in 2011, latest figures have revealed, as the airport ends the year on a high. The airport reported a growth in passenger numbers, recording a 7.6 per cent increase for the year when compared to 2010.

The project, which is due to be completed next year, will expand the departure area and also increase the number of security channels.
