Thomas Cook Airlines to go handheld on in-flight entertainment

Customers on Thomas Cook Airlines who are flying short and medium-haul will be able to connect to Sunstream, a new entertainment system using their own personal devices from this summer.

As well as enjoying movies, TV series, music and magazines, guests can book excursions tailored to their destination as well as customise and download their individualised tour guide to then use during their holiday.

They will also be able to order online from the unique duty free service Airshoppen which delivers products directly to their seat.

A chat function to stay in touch with friends and family on the ground will be integrated this summer.

Gareth Sutton, director of product at Thomas Cook Group Airlines, said: “This fantastic technology provides quality and convenient entertainment for customers who want to relax and get in the holiday spirit.

“We’re working hard on creative ideas that make leisure flying fun, from our pre-order duty free service Airshoppen, to upgraded cabin interiors, and digital, personalised entertainment systems such as this new offer on short and medium-haul flights.

“It perfectly complements our on-board entertainment on long haul which has been a great success since its introduction in 2014.”

To use Sunstream, customers simply download a free app and turn their mobile devices on to flight mode.

During the cruise part of the flight, they can activate Wi-Fi on their device to connect to the entertainment server on-board.

Destination information and access to excursion bookings and retail content are free of charge.

Thomas Cook Group Airlines is gradually introducing the mobile entertainment system across its entire fleet.

Currently, almost 70 per cent of its 65-strong short and medium-haul fleet is offering the new system.

In the UK specifically, 21 out of the 26 short and medium-haul aircrafts currently feature it.

Customers will be informed ahead of their journey if mobile entertainment is available on their flight.
