Cash-strapped Brits still prefer long-haul

online travel agent ebookers.com has revealed its top 10 destinations for flight bookings in 2011. Despite the recent increase in Air Passenger Duty (APD), ebookers.com has found that 6 out of 10 of the top 2011 destinations are long haul as travellers delve deeper into their pockets to cover the additional costs set by the Government.

According to ebookers.com’s customer flight search data, holidaymakers are refusing to forgo a faraway holiday next year, as over half of the top 10 destinations include the USA, South East Asia, South Africa, Australasia and India.

Money’s No Object
Despite the Government’s increase in APD charges, holidays are still a key part of Brits lifestyles as 80% of UK adults admitted they would forgo their monthly luxury allowance to ensure they could take their annual getaway. In addition, 20% also confessed that they would not sacrifice anything to go away, leaving themselves open to debt! [1]

Mario Bounas, Head of UK Marketing, ebookers.com, says: ‘It’s great to see that holidaymakers aren’t letting the recent APD rise determine where they go on holiday next year. For many, the opportunity to take a break away only comes around once a year, so we understand that they want to make the most of it. To help our customers get the most out of their holiday and make great savings on hotels, flights and holiday packages for 2011, ebookers.com has a fantastic range of deals to both long and short haul destinations.’’

Sporting destinations
The World Cup may be a dim and distant memory, but South Africa’s appeal to holidaymakers appears to continue as Cape Town takes its position in next year’s top 10 flight destinations. With the variety of experiences South Africa has to offer it’s not surprising that travellers would be looking to make the most of the sun, sea, sand and safari.

It’s not just the World Cup that’s sparked holidaymakers’ imaginations as Delhi, host of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, has made an appearance in the top destinations for next year, demonstrating the impact international sporting events have on travellers looking to book their next holiday.

Hot hotels
It’s not just flights to far flung destinations that British travellers are searching for. With over 95,000 accommodation options on offer through ebookers.com, over half (60%) of the top 10 hotels searched for were long haul destinations including New York, Las Vegas, Bangkok, Sydney, Dubai and Miami.
