Net-based Bike Map To Help Curb California Congestion.

An Internet-based bike map is among the projects recently funded by the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC) in the California South Coast Basin for the next year.

The MSRC, a multi-agency government group that funds transportation-related clean air projects, awarded a total of $15.4 million for projects including alternative fuel transit buses, heavy-duty vehicles, vanpools, and clean car buydown incentives. MSRC Chairman and Palm Springs Mayor William Kleindienst said, “we took a regional approach to this year`s projects. Several of the projects such as the Internet bike map service, commuter vanpools along targeted corridors and the guaranteed ride home program are designed to take cars off the road throughout the Basin`s four counties.”

The development of an Internet-based bike mapping system that gives bicyclists current information to use in trip planning is expected to cost $400,000. Each year, the MSRC helps fund projects in specific categories aimed at reducing air pollution from mobile sources such as cars, trucks and buses.
