Travel and tourism showing ‘signs of recovery’
The contribution travel and tourism makes to the world economy is forecast to dip by 5.5% next year, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council. Travel and tourism’s contribution to world GDP has fallen to less than 9.3% this year – from 9.6% in 2008.
India plans tourist boost for 2010
The sharp falls in tourist numbers to India have levelled out, according to the tourism minister. Kumari Selja said tourist numbers had dropped by 7% to 4.2m in the 10 months to October compared to the same period last year. Foreign earnings however have risen and are up by 4.1% over the same period.

Tourism Ireland means business at WTM
Tourism Ireland marked the official launch of a brand new strategy at the international travel trade show, World Travel Market, at London’s ExCel today, which aims to increase the number of visitors from Great Britain to Ireland in 2010.

World Travel Market was treated to a large sprinkling of glamour on day two as 120 finalists from Miss World beauty pageant made a special guest appearance to present a donation from the World Travel Awards to water aid charity Just a Drop.

World Travel Award winners expect their awards to boost awareness of their brands during tough market conditions. Speaking at this year’s World Travel Market, the winners said they would use their awards for marketing and brand recognition.

Tourism unites, London Mayor tells WTM
Mayor of London Boris Johnson opened World Travel Market 2009 by emphasising how “travel and tourism can bring people together in shared appreciation and understanding.” Referring to the 2012 Olympic Games, he said, “I’m optimistic about the impact of the Games. We want to use the £9.3 billion investment to boost bits of London that have been neglected for ages.

WTM: Tourism bosses eye challenging 2010
The four-day World Travel Market travel trade exhibition which starts today in London is expecting over 50,000 visitors and, as ever the focus for most will be the year ahead and how the continued impact of global recession will effect their businesses.
