Millions of Brits planning Bank Holiday getaway

Some 4.5 million Brits will make the most of the forthcoming August Bank Holiday weekend by taking an overnight holiday trip in the UK, with 3.5 million people taking that trip in England, according to VisitEngland’s Bank Holiday Trip Tracker. This is likely to generate some £1 billion in tourism spend for the UK economy, around £800 million of which will be spent in England.

VisitBritain has today welcomed a record crumbling May together with bumper spend results for the first five months of 2013. Latest figures from the ONS International Passenger Survey show a four per cent rise in the number of May visits and a five per cent increase in spend following a two per cent rise in the first five months with a striking double digit ten per cent spike in cash generated.

The department for media, culture and sport has confirmed VisitBritain’s funding for 2015/16 will fall to just under £20 million – a reduction of five per cent on the 2014/15 budget. However, the small cut has been welcomed by Christopher Rodrigues, chairman, VisitBritain, in the context of swingeing cuts seen elsewhere in government.

With the sunny weather set to continue and Britain’s gardens well and truly in bloom, the national tourism agency has released research which reveals that a staggering £7.8 billion was spent by tourists enjoying a garden in the UK, with a large chunk coming from younger visitors. A VisitBritain study identified that of the 31 million people who tend to visit Britain each year, around a third enjoy a park or garden, with around 2.4 million aged between 25-34 opposed to just 1.4 million aged between 55-64.

Unsurprisingly, London was the star performer in a year in which it became the first city to ever host three modern Olympics.
