VisitBritain points to success of UK regions

New analysis from VisitBritain has revealed that more international tourists are starting to travel across the country than ever before, with spending hitting new record levels in the majority of nations and regions for the first nine months of 2014. According to new figures from the Office for National Statistics, in the first nine months of 2014 overseas tourist spending reached new records in Wales (£303 million), Scotland (£1.5 billion), London (£8.9 billion), East of England (£693 million), North West (£849 million) and the South East (£1.7 billion).

New figures released, for the first eleven months of last year, suggest that 2014 will be another record year for inbound tourism for the UK - beating VisitBritain’s original growth forecast. During January to November 2014 there were 32.4 million visits to the UK, seven per cent more visits recorded than at the same juncture in 2013.

The tourism sector is expected to show strong growth in 2015, as it continues to support Britain’s economic resurgence, as part of the government’s long term economic plan, culture secretary Sajid Javid said earlier. Forecasts from tourism body VisitBritain predict that inbound tourism spend will rise by 4.5 per cent in 2015 with visitors from overseas expected to spend £22.2 billion – an increase of almost £1 billion on 2014.

As new research paper has revealed aspirations to visit Britain in China are stronger than ever before. The news comes as VisitBritain holds its biggest Destination China tourism mission to date in Guangzhou and Hong Kong this week. In the 2014 Anholt GfK Nations Brand Index study, China ranked Britain second out of fifty nations for ‘Tourism’ - its highest ranking to date for this attribute and one place higher than in 2013.

As VisitBritain hosts its annual GCC travel trade mission in Saudi Arabia for the first time this week, figures show that during the first three quarters of 2013, total visits from GCC countries to the UK were up by ten per cent on the same period in 2012, whilst spend increased by 11 per cent. This level of growth resulted in visits and spend hitting new records for the January to September period, with just over £1 billion spent during 452,000 total visits from the six GCC countries - Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.
