The five Rio Convention Presidencies (for UNFCCC, CBD and UNCCD) issued a joint call to step up cooperation across climate, biodiversity and land action agendas, presenting the first-ever shared Action Agenda declaration, the Belém Joint Statement, which signals a new, synergy-focused phase of implementation under the Rio Conventions. Youth, Indigenous Peoples, scientists, cities and governments all underscored that this must be driven by rights-based, community-led and science-informed action if it is to deliver real, on-the-ground impact.

United Nations signs landmark framework to curb aviation emissions

The United Nations civil aviation agency has agreed on a new emissions standard to control global greenhouse gas emissions from international airline flights. “It has taken a great deal of effort and understanding to reach this stage, and I want to applaud the spirit of consensus and compromise demonstrated by our member States, industry and civil society,” remarked Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, the council president of the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
