British Airways inks deal with China Eastern

British Airways is set to gain access to the domestic Chinese market as it launches a new partnership with Shanghai-based carrier, China Eastern Airlines. With its gleaming skyscrapers and ancient temples China is more accessible than ever before as the British carrier will start selling flights to Kunming, Xi’an, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Chongqing on a BA flight code, while the Chinese carrier will sell British Airways flights to Aberdeen, Belfast City, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Manchester and Newcastle on their MU flight code.

China Eastern Airlines has signed a purchase agreement with Airbus for 20 A350-900 aircraft, making the airline the latest customer for the aircraft. China Eastern Airlines operates one of the largest Airbus fleet in the world with nearly 300 Airbus aircraft in service, comprising A320 Family and A330 Family.

Qantas Group has said it will work with its fellow shareholders in Jetstar Hong Kong to review the enterprise, following the Air Transport Licensing Authority’s decision to reject the local carrier’s application to establish an operation in Hong Kong. Jetstar Hong Kong – a joint venture between Shun Tak Holdings, China Eastern Airlines and the Qantas Group – was announced in March 2012.

Boeing and China Eastern Airlines has celebrated the delivery of the airline’s first 777-300ER. The new airplane is the first of 20 777-300ERs China Eastern has on order. “We are delighted to introduce our first 777-300ER in China Eastern’s new look in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the 777-300ER program,” said Liu Shaoyong, chairman of China Eastern Airlines.
