Jenni Ukkonen’s and her husband’s trip to Vilnius, Lithuania to celebrate their third wedding anniversary turned into a festive occasion for the city as a whole this week.
As Finnair Flight AY 131 from Helsinki descended into Vilnius, the pilot informed the passengers that their plane was carrying the one millionth visitor to Vilnius in 2016 - a new record for the Baltic capital.
Upon landing, Ukkonen made her way to baggage claim along with the rest of the passengers.
They were given a surprise welcome there by Vilnius mayor Remigijus Šimašius along with Lithuania’s famous boys’ choir Ąžuoliukas and representatives of Go Vilnius, the city’s branding and development agency.
Each passenger received a commemorative souvenir and a Vilnius City Card that provides free access to the city’s most popular tourist attractions.
Following a song by the choir and a warm welcome from the mayor, passengers were presented with transparent holiday ornaments, each containing a numbered ticket inside.
Jenni Ukkonen was the lucky one – her ticket designated her the one millionth visitor to Vilnius this year.
Her prize? A trip for two, including flights and a two-night stay at a five-star hotel in the heart of Old Town Vilnius with the services of a private tour guide.
The trip was Jenni Ukkonen’s second to Vilnius.
She and her husband came three years ago, just after being married.
Their trip this time was a surprise she had planned for them both on the occasion of their wedding anniversary.
