Melbourne gets ready for Moomba community festival

People who have booked hotels in Melbourne for March are likely to experience the fun and excitement of this year’s Moomba Festival.

This eagerly-anticipated community event dates back to 1955 and is an annual highlight of the Australian city’s social calendar.

Held over the Labour Day long weekend, which this year falls on Friday March 5th, Moomba takes place on the banks of the Yarra River and is designed to offer fun for all the family.

Traditional highlights of the festival include the Moomba Birdman Rally, in which contestants aim to fly across the river by leaping off a four-metre platform with wings attached to their costumes.

The schedule also typically features waterskiing demonstrations, carnival rides, live music from local bands and spectacular fireworks displays.

New additions to the programme for this year include the Moomba cultural quarter, which will aim to celebrate Melbourne’s multicultural society with special performances.

Moomba culminates with a lively and colourful parade down Swanston Street, which gets underway at 11:00 local time on Monday March 8th.

The theme for this year’s parade floats has been revealed to be ‘Moomba is Melbourne and Melbourne is an eventful city’.
