Malaysia Airlines strengthens flight safety through advanced weather intelligence
Malaysia Airlines is strengthening its operational capabilities through the adoption of the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA’s) Turbulence Aware programme, reinforcing its commitment to leveraging technology and industry collaboration to support safer, more informed flight operations and a better travel experience for passengers.
The programme provides pilots with real-time turbulence information observed by participating airlines worldwide, enabling them to anticipate Clear Air Turbulence (CAT), make more informed decisions during flights, and enhance the comfort of passengers and crew. As weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable, access to timely operational intelligence is becoming increasingly important in helping airlines strengthen resilience and maintain the highest standards of safety and service.
Aida Salfaraz Ahmad Fadzil, Chief Operating Officer of Malaysia Airlines, said, “At Malaysia Airlines, safety underpins every decision we make. As the operating environment continues to evolve, we remain committed to investing in technologies and industry partnerships that empower our pilots with better operational insights. Our adoption of IATA’s Turbulence Aware programme is another step in strengthening our operational capabilities, enhancing passenger comfort and ensuring every journey is delivered with the highest standards of safety and care.”
The adoption of Turbulence Aware builds on Malaysia Airlines’ ongoing efforts to strengthen operational excellence and complements its recent recognition as a Seven Star PLUS safety-rated airline by AirlineRatings.com. The accreditation places Malaysia Airlines among global carriers recognised for exceptional cabin safety standards, operational discipline and a strong company-wide safety culture.
Frederic Leger, SVP Products & Services at IATA, said, “Timely data helps airlines mitigate the impact of turbulence, improving safety and delivering a more comfortable flight to passengers. Each new airline joining IATA’s Turbulence Aware expands and enriches its coverage, benefiting all participants. We are pleased to welcome Malaysia Airlines to the programme. Their participation significantly strengthens our data coverage, particularly across Asia.”

Turbulence remains a significant operational challenge in aviation, with potential impacts on both safety and efficiency. By improving access to timely and accurate turbulence data, the Turbulence Aware platform supports better situational awareness for flight crews and contributes to more stable and efficient operations across the global aviation network.
Malaysia Airlines’ participation reflects its continued investment in safe, reliable, customer-focused operations, and industry collaboration to support global efforts in enhancing aviation safety and efficiency. With its extensive network across Asia, Europe and Oceania, Malaysia Airlines’ participation will help improve turbulence data coverage in one of the world’s most operationally dynamic regions.
