Travel and Internet leaders launch City.mobi

The World Group, web design firm Fortune Cookie and dotMobi, the company behind the .mobi domain for mobile web content, today announced the launch of a special joint venture: World Mobi Ltd. This new venture brings together the travel industry expertise of the World Group, WEB Design from Fortune Cookie and the mobile domain names from dotMobi to create more than 600 city-based mobile sites for tourists around the world.

The city sites are easily accessible from any internet-ready mobile phone - regardless of operator or phone model. Travellers simply type in city.mobi to find a wealth of information on local hotels, restaurants, shopping and more.

Like all .mobi sites, the mobile tourist web portals created by World Mobi are designed for the needs of a mobile user and will download quickly to ensure users have fast information and low data charges, whether on a basic mobile or a high-end device like an Apple iPhone or Nokia N96.

The Managing Director of London-based World Mobi Ltd., David Ryder, said, “These 600-plus sites contain simple data, typically with lists of hotels, restaurants, bars and useful other information. World Mobi is working with major cities, countries and businesses to provide an in-depth mobile experience.”

The city.mobi sites join a groundswell of travel and tourism companies who’ve gone “.mobi,” including the American Automobile Association (AAA), Amtrak, Air France, Hilton, KLM, Marriott, Renfe, SAS, Spanair, Thalys, ESPN, The Weather Channel and ZAGAT Survey.

The partnership with dotMobi includes 600-plus premium city domain names, including london.mobi, berlin.mobi, nyc.mobi, lasvegas.mobi and rio.mobi, to name a few.

“We are also working with tourist boards and other contributors such as hotels, restaurants, airlines and car rental companies to ensure that their mobile web sites meet the needs of visitors. Additionally, most .com city name web sites do not have data supported by the city’s tourist board. World Mobi is making sure this is not the case with .mobi names. To that end, World Mobi will work the tourists boards to ensure that all content on their relevant city.mobi site reflects the relevant tourist board,” David Ryder added. “Any tourist board who is interested can contact World Mobi directly for further information on ensuring its city is added to World Mobi’s global program of travel and tourist promotion.”

Worldmobi will also bring advertising to the consumer across all the mobile portals therefore offering brands global access to over 1.4Billion mobile data enabled handsets currently on the market. This ground breaking worldwide product is the first of its kind and will develop to offer more value added services such as location based applications, social networking and user-generated content where for the first time users will be able to add and comment on content via their handset.
