APD and EasyJet Reactive Statement

Chris Brown, co-founder of online travel agency sunshine.co.uk, commented on the news that EasyJet has warned against a rise in Air Passenger Duty:

“Whilst EasyJet are quite right to say that a hike in APD on short-haul flights will have an impact on UK air passenger numbers and the environment, I don’t think it will be as bad as the some 3 million they are predicting. If Britons want to go on holiday, I’m not convinced they’ll be put off by the idea just because of a slight rise in costs. It’s likely tourists will look for cheaper alternatives, which doesn’t necessarily mean they will look to visit long haul destinations which present lower charges. What you have to take into consideration, is that people who have already made their mind up about where they want to go on holiday aren’t likely to be deterred by extra costs; they will simply work out other ways to afford it or look to compromise on things like accommodation or length of holiday instead.”
